Why Your Life Keeps Repeating Itself (And How to Actually Change It)

Have you ever noticed that your problems seem to wear different outfits but they’re really the same problem? A new relationship that somehow feels like the old one. A new job with the same frustrations. A new year that quietly turns into the same year again. If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something first: it’s not because you’re broken, and it’s not bad luck. It’s because of how we’re wired — and in Vedic astrology, we’d say it’s also because of the patterns already written into your birth chart (kundli), quietly repeating themselves through your transits (gochar — the ongoing movement of the planets through the sky) until you consciously work with them instead of against them.
Most of us live on autopilot. We wake up, think the thoughts we thought yesterday, feel the feelings we’re used to feeling, and react the way we always react. Our mind loves patterns because patterns feel safe and require no effort. The problem is that when our inner world stays exactly the same, our outer world has no reason to change either. We keep producing the same “us,” so life keeps producing the same results. Astrologically, this is why two people can be going through the same planetary period (dasha) or the same tough transit —say, Saturn (Shani, the planet of discipline, delay, and karmic lessons) moving through a difficult house — and one person stays stuck while the other grows through it. The sky sets the weather, but you still decide how you walk through it. If you want a different outcome, you can’t just wish for it or wait for it — you have to become a slightly different person than the one who created the situation you’re in now. New thoughts. New emotional responses. New choices in the small, ordinary moments of your day.
Here’s a way to think about it that I find helpful, even if you’re not into science: everything in the universe, including us, gives off a kind of energy (physicists sometimes call this an electromagnetic signature — basically, the invisible “signal” your state of mind and mood puts out into the world, similar to how a radio station broadcasts on a certain frequency). When you’re anxious, doubtful, or stuck replaying the past, you’re broadcasting that same old signal, day after day. And whatever matches that signal — the same kinds of people, opportunities, and situations — is what tends to show up in your life. It’s not magic and it’s not mysticism. It’s simply that we tend to attract and notice what matches who we’re already being. In Vedic astrology, we understand this as the interplay between your birth chart and your free will: your chart shows the raw energetic blueprint you were born with, but the planets in that chart are strengthened, weakened, or reshaped by how you actually live — your habits, your discipline, your remedies (upay), your awareness. A weak Moon (Chandra, the planet governing the mind and emotions) doesn’t have to mean a permanently anxious mind; it means that mind needs more conscious care to broadcast something steadier. So when your inner state doesn’t change, don’t be surprised when your circumstances — or your chart’s harder promises — don’t either.
This is really the heart of it: change isn’t something that happens to you, it’s something you practice by becoming someone new, on purpose, before the proof shows up. You don’t need a dramatic life event to shift — you need to consistently think, feel, and act like the version of yourself who already has what you want, even in small everyday moments. It will feel unfamiliar at first, maybe even uncomfortable, because you’re breaking a habit your mind has repeated for years. Your chart may hand you a certain kind of Saturn transit or a certain dasha to move through, but it doesn’t hand you your response to it — that part is yours to write. That discomfort of doing things differently is actually a good sign — it means you’re no longer on autopilot. You’re finally in the driver’s seat, working with your planets instead of being run by them, quietly building the person capable of a different life, one honest choice at a time.
